India
is at a unique advantageous position
when it comes to the IT and ITes industry.
To begin with, it has a very favourable
demographic profile with nearly 60
percent of the population in 15-59
age bracket and more than half below
25 as compared to the relatively ageing
economies of the west and even Japan
and China. With nearly 441,000 technical
graduates and 2.3 million other graduates
with reasonably good English speaki`ng
abilities walking out of colleges
every year, the addressable talent
pool for a burgeoning IT industry
is considerably large in India.
According to the National Association of Software Service Companies (NASSCOM), total direct employment in the Indian IT-ITES has grown approximately from 2,84,000 in financial year 1999-2000 to 1,293,000 by the end of 2006. With domestic majors showing double digit growth and more international companies offshoring high-end research activities to India, the revenues being generated by the BPO Industry is set to touch $60 billion (Rsn267,526 crore) by 2009-2010. This means jobs for 50,000 rr profession als and 1.4 million BPO professionals.
